"Tuskegee Study: something deeply, profoundly, morally wrong" (Bill Clinton)
"COURTS of BIOETHICS"
Trials and debates in law, liberty and liability
A theatrical project by Fondazione Sigma-Tau
co-produced with Auditorium Fondazione Musica per Roma
Even in Italy issues and disputes in bioethics showcase cultural and political clashes; many cases in point have shown how different and uncomparable is the bioethical thinking with respect to the medical ethics of Western tradition, and they have led to litigations in courtrooms.
The new theatrical project "Courts of Bioethics" by Fondazione Sigma-Tau brings up a few historical cases to the Auditorium audience. As their tremendous topicality is relevant both for culture and people, they were carefully selected to illustrate changes in perceiving and acknowledging individual rights, liberties and responsibilities.
The key to highlight the content of disputes and their topicality is a two-step mix of theatre experience and dialogic discussion. Step 1: actors perform texts drawn from documents in the case to inform the audience thoroughly. Step 2: the case is extensively debated by two leading experts from opposite positions. Here comes the definite interaction between audience and experts. In the end, the audience -- formally acting as an effective jury -- returns the verdict.
