The Fondazione Sigma-Tau inaugurates a series of public lectures and meetings in the Auditorium Parco della Musica, starting 27 October at 11 am in the Teatro Studio -- labeled "S & E - SCHOOL and EXCELLENCE: Schools of Science in XX-century Italy" (a co-production with Fondazione Musica per Roma). They specifically address Rome high schools to have students know about traditions of scientific research shedding lustre on Italy.
Taking up a suggestion by Gilberto Corbellini, the first lecture will be held by Enrico Bellone, physician and scientific popularizer. He is going to tell about the school of physics established in via Panisperna in Rome around the 1930s. Follows a discussion coordinated by the Fondazione Sigma-Tau General Secretaty, Pino Donghi, involving this time Luciano Maiani, head of Consiglio nazionale delle ricerche.
These meetings will be also on 13 and 30 November, and 14 December. They aim at being an occasion to think over chances and limits of scientific research and culture in Italy. But also to consider which conditions have fostered outstanding results, as well as which reasons have kept from setting up a sound and efficient system of scientific production.
Many italian scientists were involved in such traditions, both for the development of knowledge and for the social and political setting they acted in. Their lives mark relevant spots in tbe history of XX-century Italy and point out the essential link between growth of excellence and training context. |
